Thanks to our metallurgical know-how, state-of-the-art facilities, and groundbreaking environmental standards within our industry, Aurubis is a leading global copper recycler and provider of non-ferrous metals. Our main area of expertise is the processing and optimal utilization of complex concentrates and recycling raw materials to produce metals of the highest purity. In addition to our main metal, copper, these include precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum group metals, but also metals such as lead, nickel, tin, zinc, and selenium. We produce more than 1 million t of copper cathodes with 99.99 % purity in our European smelter network each year. The cathodes can be sold on the metal exchanges, though we process some of them into a variety of intermediate products made of copper and copper alloys as well. These products include continuous cast wire rod, shapes, profiles, and flat rolled products. Additional by-products such as sulfuric acid, iron silicate, and synthetic minerals round off the product portfolio.

Die Aurubis AG (vormals Norddeutsche Affinerie AG) ist ein börsennotierter Kupferproduzent sowie Kupferwiederverwerter mit Sitz in Hamburg.[3] Nach der Übernahme des belgischen Kupferproduzenten Cumerio durch die Norddeutsche Affinerie AG im Jahr 2008 firmiert das Unternehmen seit April 2009 als Aurubis.[3] Das Unternehmen produziert jährlich über eine Million Tonnen Kupferkathoden und stellt daraus diverse Kupferprodukte her.[4] Ferner verarbeitet Aurubis auch Blei, Zink, Zinn, Nickel, Silber, Gold und Metalle der Platingruppe in Abhängigkeit der vorausgehenden Recyclingmaterialien.[4] Aurubis ging aus mehreren Zusammenschlüssen anderer Unternehmen hervor. Der früheste bekannte Vorläufer ist die Firma Beit, Marcus und Salomon, Gold- und Silberscheider, die 1783 zum ersten Mal im Hamburger Kaufmannsalmanach benannt wurde. Dieses Unternehmen verhüttete zunächst Münzen und Edelmetall-Legierungen. Im Laufe der Zeit verschob sich die Produktion zur Verhüttung von Erzen. Nachdem die Hamburger Reeder ab etwa 1830 begannen, auf den Rückfahrten ihrer Auswandererschiffe von Nord- oder Südamerika Kupfererz mitzubringen, ergab sich ein lukrativer Markt. Im Jahr 1846 beteiligte sich Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn an der Beit, Marcus und Salomon, Gold- und Silberscheider unter Ferdinand Beit (1817–1870).[5] Das gemeinsame Unternehmen nannte sich Elbkupferwerk. Es verarbeitete Kupfererze, die eigene und fremde Schiffe aus Südamerika, hauptsächlich aus Chile, im Hamburger Hafen anlandeten.[6] Der Konjunkturaufschwung führte 1856 zur Gründung der Elbhütten-Affinier- und Handelsgesellschaft, wobei das Elbkupferwerk und das Beit'sche Stammwerk, ein Unternehmen von Marcus Solomon Beit[7], zusammengeführt wurden. Diese produzierte rund 3000 Tonnen Kupfer pro Jahr. Nachdem die Norddeutsche Bank das Beit'sche Stammwerk übernommen hatte, gründete sie am 28. April 1866 die Norddeutsche Affinerie AG. Seit 1910 produziert die Norddeutsche Affinerie Kupfer auf der Peute, einem Industriegebiet in Hamburg-Veddel. Ihre Produktionsanlagen nehmen einen Großteil des dortigen Industriegebiets ein. Nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten mussten mit Richard Merton, Julius Levisohn und Heinrich Wohlwill drei Personen jüdischer Abstammung aus dem Vorstand zurücktreten.[8]:40 Die Norddeutsche Affinerie erlebte in diesen Jahren einen massiven Aufschwung: Am Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs deckte die Firma die Hälfte des deutschen Kupferverbrauchs und beschäftigte etwa 1450 Menschen.[8]:37 Ab 1940 war die Norddeutsche Affinerie an der Verarbeitung von Raubgold beteiligt, das im Rahmen der Leihhausaktion von jüdischen Besitzern erpresst worden war.[8]:40 Bereits ein Jahr zuvor übernahmen mit Wilhelm Avieny von der Metallgesellschaft und Hermann Schlosser von der Degussa zwei Personen leitende Funktionen im Aufsichtsrat, die auf enge Weise mit der nationalsozialistischen Politik verbunden waren.[8]:39 Während des Weltkriegs war die Norddeutsche Affinerie wichtiger Zulieferer für die Munitionsindustrie und setzte in der Produktion Zwangsarbeiter ein; siehe auch Artikel Glockenfriedhof. Zu Höchstzeiten im Juli 1944 waren von insgesamt rund 1900 Beschäftigen 806 Zwangsarbeiter.[8]:41 Im Jahr 2002 wurde Prymetall übernommen; das Unternehmen Prym betrieb zuvor zusammen mit den Wieland-Werken in Stolberg ein Kupfer-Vorwalzwerk. Seit Mai 2007 ist Aurubis durch eine sogenannte virtuelle Kraftwerksscheibe – eine gesellschaftsrechtliche Beteiligung in Höhe von 115 MW – am Kohlekraftwerk Moorburg, das Vattenfall Europe in Hamburg-Moorburg für importierte Steinkohle errichtet hat, beteiligt.[9] Durch einen langfristigen Liefervertrag, dessen Preisstellung sich an den Erzeugungskosten des entsprechenden Kraftwerks orientiert, wird Aurubis von Vattenfall bis 2040 pro Jahr eine Milliarde Kilowattstunden Strom beziehen. Im Februar 2008 übernahm die Norddeutsche Affinerie nach einer langen Auseinandersetzung mit A-Tec Industries über 91 % des belgischen Kupferbearbeiters Cumerio. Im April 2008 wurde durch einen Squeeze-out die Komplettübernahme von Cumerio vollzogen.[10] Im Februar 2009 beschloss die Hauptversammlung der Norddeutschen Affinerie AG mit Wirkung vom 1. April 2009 die Umbenennung der Gesellschaft in Aurubis AG. Der Name Aurubis wurde in Anlehnung an die lateinischen Wörter für Gold und Rot gewählt, um die Bedeutung des Kupfers als Metall von außergewöhnlichem Wert („rotes Gold“) hervorzuheben. Das Firmenlogo blieb dagegen unverändert.[11] Zeitgleich hat sich Prymetall GmbH & Co. KG in Aurubis Stolberg GmbH & Co. KG umbenannt. 2011 vollzog Aurubis die Akquisition der früheren Luvata Rolled Products Division. Observing our company's values, legal provisions, and internal policies holds great significance at Aurubis, as illegal conduct can cause considerable damage and lead to offense proceedings or criminal proceedings. Furthermore, there is the danger of harming the company's reputation and thus its market position. The term "compliance" refers to conduct that is consistent with specific requirements. These include laws, regulations, and internal company policies, e.g., a code of conduct or ethics. Since the Aurubis Group acts through its employees, every employee is obligated to follow applicable laws. Internal corporate conduct policies (e.g., Code of Conduct, Compliance Policy, Antitrust Law Policy, Anti-Corruption Policy) provide employees with standards for lawful conduct. The principles formulated in these policies apply in particular to interactions with customers, suppliers, other companies, shareholders, authorities, employees, and supervisors and include adherence to anti-discrimination provisions, product and occupational safety regulations, and environmental protection, in addition to prohibiting anti-competitive behavior and corruption. Observance of legal provisions and conduct policies is ensured by three factors: prevention, monitoring, and sanctions. Preventive measures include internal policies, consultation, and especially employee training. For example, employees regularly participate in face-to-face and online training related to the topics of antitrust law and anti-corruption. Corporate auditing has a monitoring function. It verifies whether provisions and internal policies are being observed. If breaches of the law or internal policies are discovered, sanctions come into effect under labor law, civil law, or even criminal law. Aurubis has appointed a Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) in order to better fulfill the extensive requirements resulting from legal standards and conduct policies. The CCO is the central contact for all questions relevant to compliance and is responsible for further incorporating the issue of compliance into the company culture. He ensures that the same rules apply to all employees in the Group. Local compliance officers at the individual Group sites are also available to answer employees’ questions.

Aurubis uses energy as efficiently as possible and takes responsibility for climate protection. The products we manufacture contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in business and society because they play a central role in the transmission of renewable energies, in applications that boost energy efficiency, and in electric vehicles. As an energy-intensive company, we assume responsibility for climate protection. The individual production steps in our value chain are energy intensive and are the main source of direct and indirect CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2) in the Group. Taking the entire value chain into consideration, however, the majority of the CO2 emissions are generated in the upstream and downstream parts of our value-added chain (Scope 3), meaning they come from our suppliers, customers, and service providers. The majority of the Scope 3 emissions originate from the activities of the mining companies from which we source copper concentrates. Energy management systems (EMS) contribute to efficiently steering energy consumption and identifying energy savings potential. All our sites have already been certified in accordance with ISO 50001, clear proof that our energy management and monitoring systems meet high standards.

Die darauffolgenden acht Jahrzehnte waren geprägt durch den Bau weiterer Anlagen sowie der Ausweitung der Röhhütten-Kapazitäten.Diese Expansion führte 1997 dazu, im Bereichein Joint Venture mit Degussa einzugehen und sich zudem über den Börsengang 1998 frisches Kapital zu beschaffen. Schlussendlich stieg 2008 die Norddeutsche Affinerie AG durch den Zusammenschluss mit Cumerio zu dem führendenproduzenten in Europa auf. Im folgenden Jahr wurde die Hamburger Firma in Aurubis AG umbenannt. Die Produktpalette umfasst vor allem die Herstellung von Kupferkathoden aus Kupferkonzentraten, Altkupfer und Recyclingrohstoffen. Dabei werden diese zu Walzprodukten, Stranggussformaten, Gießwalzdraht sowie Kupferlegierungen weiterverarbeitet. Darüber hinaus gehören Schwefelsäure bzw. Eisensilikat zum angebotenen Portfolio.In der Zehn-Jahres-Betrachtung haben Aktionäre mit der Aurubis-Aktie per saldo 100,2% gewonnen, was einer jährlichen Performance von im Mittel 4,9% entspricht. Aurubis has systematically structured and expanded its sustainability activities in the past several years – from sustainability reporting to the development of the first Sustainability Strategy in 2013. We report the status of target achievement annually in our Non-Financial Report and 2023 Sustainability Report.
